Men's Lacrosse Opens 2021 Campaign against Babson

Norton, Mass. - April 10, 2021 - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team fell to Babson College, 20-2, in the season and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field. The Beavers moved to 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons dropped to 0-1 in the conference to open the year.

Babson was led offensively by Ryan Donovan and Mason O'Hanlon who combined for seven goals on 15 shots, while defensively Gary Sunderland notched a game-high eight groundballs for the visitors. Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) led Wheaton's defense with four groundballs and a trio of caused turnovers.

Babson scored the first six goals of the contest before Robert Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) put Wheaton on the board with a man-up goal 7:50 into the second quarter. Babson's first half featured two goals apiece from both Donovan and Lee Sipes.

The visitors outscored Wheaton 6-0 in the third and 7-1 in the fourth as Babson won the contest by a 20-2 final. O'Hanlon registered his first hat trick of the campaign with on three unassisted strikes for the Beavers in the third quarter. Wheaton's lone goal in the fourth came from junior Alec Morin (Belmont, Mass.).

Babson outshot Wheaton, 57-13, and held the advantage in groundballs, 46-21. The Beavers also won 20-of-26 faceoffs and went 21-for-23 on clearing attempts. Wheaton won six faceoffs and went 15-for-31 on clears.

Mac Mowat (1-0) picked up the win in net for Babson with three saves over the first half, while Cory Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass.) dropped to 0-1 with 12 saves in net for the Lyons over the first 39:05 of the contest.

Wheaton is scheduled to play its next game on Saturday, April 17 at 1:00 pm at the United States Coast Guard Academy.
