BOSTON, Mass. - Earning their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory, the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team defeated the Emerson College Lions, 23-7, on Saturday.

With the win, Wheaton advances to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC play while Emerson falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.

Sophomore Josh Talanian led the charge for the Lyons, tallying a team-high six goals on the day with junior Scott Whear right behind him with five goals and two assists. Also scoring for the Lyons were sophomore CJ Leighton (three goals, two assists), senior Zach Brode (two goals, two assists), sophomore Jake Moss (two goals), first-year Jonah Cameron (one goal), senior Will Morrison (one goal), first-year Ben Sanchez (one goal), sophomore Alex Stomberg (one goal) and sophomore Matt Morgan (one goal).

Wheaton opened action in the first quarter with a goal from Whear to start the game. Emerson responded with a goal of their own to tie it 1-1, but the Lyons quickly pushed backing, recording five unanswered goals leading into the second quarter. From there, Wheaton maintained their offensive drive with six more goals before halftime, garnering themselves a healthy 12-2 lead.

Emerson collected three goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth to chip away at Wheaton's lead, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lyons doubled their score in the second half, claiming the 23-7 victory.

Wheaton held the 45-31 advantage on ground balls and 69-18 edge on shots.

First-year goalkeeper Colin Walsh earned the win to advance to 4-2 overall on the season.

The Lyons compete next at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday for another NEWMAC contest on slated to begin at 7 p.m.
