NORTON, Mass. - First-year Maddy Morrison continued her stellar 2016-17 with yet another record breaking dive Saturday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the Wheaton College women's swimming & diving program hosted the Jumbos of Tufts University. Morrison won the 1-meter dive with a score of 281.48, but its was the Jumbos who won the event, outscoring the Lyons 174-121.
Morrison also took home second place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 285.00, while Katherine Conway finished in third (239.70). Conway also finished in third place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 222.75.
The 200 medley relay was a nail-bitter with Wheaton's No.1 relay team of Jenna Hayden, Jess Ryabin, Maggie Lawler and Caitlin Daley finishing just behind the Jumbos. The Lyon's ended the race in 1:52.99, while Tufts touched first with a time of 1:52.25.
Hayden followed up the relay with a first-place finish in the 200 back, beating her closest competitor by two seconds (2:12.93). The junior then captured the top spot in the 100 fly, finishing the event in 1:01.98. Alexa Resetar also collected a first-place finish for the Lyons, beating the field in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.72.
Lucy Frey finished third the 1650 free (19:38.05), while Joanna Zak did the same in the 100 back (1:04.36). Daley had a strong showing in the 200 free, finishing just two seconds behind the top finisher with a time of 2:03.58. Daley also turned in a second place performance in the 50 free (25.84).
Sophia Hatzikos concluded the 200 fly in 2:20.79, which was good enough to earn her second place. Maggie Lawler concluded the 100 free in 57.25, while Rowan Rice finished third in the tightly contested 200 breast. Rice concluded the race in 2:35.96, just two hundreths of a second out of second place and three tenths of a second out of first.
Like the opening relay, the 200 yard freestyle was another thrilling battle as the Lyons (Daley, Slater, Lawler, Hayden) finished just one tenth of a second behind the Jumbos with a time of 1:42.32.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a tri-match at Trinity (Conn.) with Connecticut College.
