Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, but dropped 11-6 against the Clark University Cougars.
The loss moves the Lyons to 4-5 (0-1 NEWMAC) as Clark advances to 8-1 (1-0 NEWMAC).
Clark jumped on the board first when Andrew Myhre scored the first goal at 7:46. Wheaton responded two minutes later with a goal from sophomore Scott Whear, but the Cougars would push through three more goals before the Lyons could regain control offensively and tally the second goal at 4:11 from junior Ryan Gjerset.
Whear wrapped up the second quarter for the Lyons with his second goal at 00:20, putting Wheaton within one.
Sophomore Griffin Phaneuf and first-year Matt Morgan registered goals for the Lyons to tie it in the third quarter, but it wouldn't be enough as the Cougars would take back control and make it 7-5.
Phaneuf would offer one additional goal for Wheaton, but Clark would put up four unanswered goals to end the game and seal the 11-6 victory. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Clair tallied 13 saves.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Emerson College at 1 p.m. at Nordin Field.
