Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team traveled to Whittier, Calif. on Monday to battle the Whittier College Poets where the Lyons walked away with the 13-8 victory, including four goals by junior Angela Mallis.
The win adavances the Lyons to 3-2 on the season, while the Poets fall to 4-4.
Whittier began the game early, netting a goal just 1:03 into the game. The Poets tallied one more goal ten minutes later before the Lyons could respond.
Mallis got Wheaton on the board with an assist from junior Hannah Gasperoni and a free position shot to tie the game.
The Lyons closed out the first half ahead 4-3 thanks to a last minute goal by senior Brooke Sabol, assisted by senior Allie Bush.
Mallis secured her third goal of the game off an assist from Sabol at the start of the second half. Sabol would continue less than two minutes later to assist sophomore Katie Peters into a goal of her own to make it 6-3 as Mallis dished out her fourth and final goal at 3:31 off a pass from Bush.
Whittier gained momentum back halfway through the second half as they knocked in two goals to try and even up the game, but would be answered by senior Madison Cohen with a Wheaton goal at 6:15.
Wheaton pushed through four more goals by the end of the game, including two from Cohen to give her a hat trick, with Whittier only able to answer back with one final goal as the Lyons secured the 13-8 victory.
Mallis ended the game with four goals, one assist off of five shots on goal. Cohen concluded the match with three goals and four total shots as sophomore goalkeeper Molly Witten claimed the win, collecting 12 saves.
Wheaton returns to action on Friday for game two in California at 10 p.m. EST as the Lyons take on the Redlands University Bulldogs (3-4).
