Hallee, Smart Named NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Second Team All-Conference

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse players Katie Hallee (Norway, Maine) and Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) earned New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Second Team All-Conference honors, it was announced by the NEWMAC.

Hallee was one of the best defenders in the league, ranking second for the Lyons with a career-high 32 ground balls, while standing fifth on the team with six caused turnovers. The Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School product also registered seven draw controls for the fourth-most on the team. The junior was one of four Wheaton players to start all 17 matches and came up with multiple ground balls 12 times. An Environmental Science major, Hallee picked up a career-high five ground balls to go with a caused turnover and a draw control against Smith College on April 12. Hallee recorded multiple ground balls in eight straight games from March 1-29.

For her career, Hallee has started 29 of 40 matches that she's appeared in, while registering 50 ground balls, 14 caused turnovers and nine draw controls.

Smart was one of the best all-around players in the NEWMAC. She had the uncanny distinction of being the only player in the conference to rank among the top six in both ground balls and draw controls per game. The senior averaged 2.41 ground balls per contest and 3.94 draw controls per outing to rank sixth among league leaders in both. The midfielder was one of the Lyons' top offensive players as well, scoring 24 goals and adding 14 assists to rank third in both categories for Wheaton. A graduate of Messalonskee High School, Smart racked up a career-high 38 points for the second-most on the squad. The middie was one of the most accurate shooters in the conference with a .490 mark that put her second on the team. The Neuroscience major topped the team with 41 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers, 67 draw controls and eight free position goals. Her draw control tally was the seventh most in school history. Smart also started all 17 games for the Lyons and notched at least one point in all but three matches, while picking up at least one ground ball in all but two contests. She enjoyed a three-game stretch from March 10-15, where she collected 14 points on 11 goals and three assists and was named the NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week on March 17. Smart's versatility was on full display when she netted four goals, picked up four ground balls, caused four turnovers and won a draw control against Johnson & Wales University on March 12.

All told, Smart has started 69 of 70 career games, while scoring 42 goals and adding 28 assists for 70 points. She amassed 120 draw controls to stand 11th on the program's career list and also finished her tenure with 111 ground balls and 54 caused turnovers.

Wheaton finished the season with an 8-9 overall record, including 5-5 in league play and fell in the opening round of the NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
