Gassen, Zeff both win at singles
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team lost to MIT, 7-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Wednesday evening inside the Haas Athletic Center. Today's match was played indoors due to inclement weather.
Junior David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and sophomore Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) both picked up victories in singles for the Lyons.
Gassen won by a 7-6 (4-0), 6-3 score at No. 1 singles over MIT junior Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa./Conestoga), who is ranked No. 14 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional rankings. Meanwhile, Zeff earned his third victory of the season at the No. 5 position with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against junior Justin Cheung (Sydney, Australia/Sydney Grammar School).
Gassen and senior captain Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) played a tightly contested No. 1 doubles match against Wang and senior Eugene Oh (Alpharetta, Ga./Westminster School) but lost to the Engineers' duo by an 8-6 score. MIT swept doubles play and claimed No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles to claim the victory.
Wheaton (4-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) travels to Springfield College for a NEWMAC clash with the Pride at 1 p.m. MIT (9-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) hosts Amherst College tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
