Morrison collects three points in the loss

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team lost to MIT, 10-6, on Wednesday night at Roberts Field in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup.

Sophomore Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass./Salisbury School) led the Wheaton attack with three points on two goals and one assist. Senior Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline), first-year Griffin Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School), sophomore Ryan Gjerset (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Catholic Academy) and junior Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) all contributed one goal apiece.

MIT sophomore Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) paced all goal scorers with four markers on the night, while first-year Graham Davis (Crofton, Md./Severn School) collected four points on two goals and two assists. Senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y./Tully), junior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore), first-year Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) and classmate Nick Martin (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) all added solo tallies in the win.

Wheaton outscored the Engineers 4-1 in the first period as Phaneuf opened the scoring with a strike at the 12:16 mark. After Orrson evened the score at 1-1 with 9:02 left to play, Hillman (5:33), Rumberger (2:59) and Morrison (2:21) buried three-straight tallies to claim a three goal advantage headed into the second period.

MIT went on to hold the Lyons scoreless for the next 39:59 of play en route to a 9-4 lead midway through the fourth period. Traub scored two goals in the second and twice more in the third to highlight the Engineers' 8-0 run over that span.

Morrison broke up the string of consecutive goals at the 7:22 mark of the fourth period on a feed by Hillman to make it 9-5. Cook buried a goal at 4:02 to bump the advantage back to five goals (10-5) before Gjerset capped the scoring in the contest with his 11th goal of the season with 1:46 remaining.

Wheaton junior goalkeeper Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School) made a game-high 13 saves in the loss (9-6). MIT junior goalkeeper Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) stopped 11 shots to improve his record to 12-3 on the season.

The Lyons outshot the hosts, 41-38, and went 14-for-22 in clears. MIT was 15-for-24 in clears, 15-for-20 at the face-off X and also produced a 38-29 differential in ground balls.

Wheaton (9-6, 3-3 NEWMAC) hosts Mass. Maritime in its regular season finale on Saturday at 7 p.m. MIT (12-3, 5-1 NEWMAC) travels to Springfield College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
