Lyons pick up second league win
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team shut out Emerson College, 9-0, on Wednesday evening in a league matchup at the Clark Tennis Courts.
In doubles play, sophomore
Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) and junior
Jim Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) made quick work of their opponents at the No. 3 position for an 8-1 triumph.
Juniors
Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) and
Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) breezed to an 8-2 decision at No.2, while classmate
David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and senior
Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) produced an eventual 8-4 win at No. 1 to give the Lyons a 3-0 advantage headed into singles.
White cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1, while Zeff notched a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 4. First-year Tyler Butler (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Beaton both won their matches at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, by 6-2, 6-0 scores and Chan picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 slot.
Archer completed the sweep in a tightly contest match at No. 3 by a 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 score.
Wheaton (6-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) hosts Oneonta State on Friday at 4 p.m. Emerson (2-6, 0-3 NEWMAC) hosts Coast Guard Academy in a conference match on Saturday at 1 p.m.
