Zeff picks up two wins
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team claimed a 5-4 conference victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon.
At No. 1 singles, Springfield sophomore
Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass./Lee) pulled out a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Wheaton junior
David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep), while
Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) slipped past the Pride's
Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn./Portland) in No. 2 play (7-5, 6-3).
Wheaton senior captain Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) was the victor in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over first-year Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and junior Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) and sophomore Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) both picked up wins in No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, over Springfield's Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn./Prospect) and Nate Weissman (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow).
Archer posted a 6-3, 6-4 decision while Zeff produced a 6-3, 7-6 (3) triumph. Springfield's Joshua Robinson (Southold, N.Y./Southold) concluded singles play with a victory over Jim Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) by a 6-2, 6-4 score.
The Pride won two of the three doubles matches as DeVarennes and Danielwicz claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, over Gessen and Chan, and Grant and Beynor followed suit with an 8-5 against Archer and White.
Zeff and Butler finished the day with the 8-6 triumph over Weissman and Robinson in No. 3 doubles for the Lyons.
Wheaton (5-5, 1-3 NEWMAC) hosts Emerson College in a conference match next Wednesday at 4 p.m. Springfield (4-7, 1-3 NEWMAC) travels to Clark University on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. conference contest.
