Lyons move to 4-1 overall
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team defeated Bridgewater State University, 9-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening inside the Haas Athletic Center.
Senior captain Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School), juniors David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep), Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School), Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and first-year Tyler Butler (Portland, Maine/Deering) were all double-winners for the Lyons in the matchup.
In doubles action, Gassen and Chan produced an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 position, while White and Archer registered an 8-0 decision at No. 2. Butler and junior Jim Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) completed the sweep with an 8-0 triumph at the No. 3 slot.
Gassen went on to win at No. 1 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score, while White didn't drop a set at the No. 2 position for a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Chan and Archer fashioned identical 6-1. 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and sophomore Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) won in straight sets at No. 5. Butler took home his singles match at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-0 score as well.
Wheaton (4-1) travels to Brandeis University on Saturday for a non-conference matchup against the Judges at 3 p.m. Bridgewater State (0-1) visits Western Connecticut State University this Saturday at 1 p.m.
