Men's Swimming & Diving Opens NEWMAC Competition with Coast Guard

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's swimming and diving team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition by taking on the U.S. Coast Guard Bears on Friday. The Lyons walked away with a final score of 119 as the Bears tallied 175.

Wheaton opened the meet in the 400 yard medley relay and placing second was Jacob Cost, Samuel Zarfos, Jonathan Dunnett and Ross Johnston who clocked in at 3:34.38 to get things going.

Johnston continued action for the Lyons in the 200 yard freestyle where he placed second with a final time of 1:47.39. Timmer Sposato (1:5172) and David Bowen (2:04.35) followed him.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Cost tapped in first place for Wheaton at 54.48, collecting nine points for the team. Kevin Silva (57.90) and Chris Steward (59.18) were right behind him.

The Coast Guard managed to finish first place in the 100 yard breaststroke, but Wheaton was right on their tail as they clocked in with the next top three places thanks to Dunnett (1:00.99), Zarfos (1:02.49) and Todd Lambert (1:03.13).

Competing in the 200 yard butterfly, Johnston was the top finisher for Wheaton again as he clocked in at 2:04.26 for second place, Mackenzie DeWitt (2:14.63) and Jordan Petersen (2:26.50) all tapped in for the Lyons.

Frederick Garneau clutched first place in the 50 yard freestyle as he battled it out with the Bears for a final time of 22.09. Jerard Fredette (22.86), Daniel Spencer (23.57) and Raymond Bortolot (23.94) also competed in that race for Wheaton. Garneau also went on to place first in the 100 yard freestyle, tapping in at 49.09.

Cost continued the momentum for the Lyons as he grabbed his own first place honor in the 200 yard backstroke finishing at 2:01.40. Dunnett and Jeremy Zak went on to sweep the top two spots in the 200 yard breaststroke for the men at 2:16.76 and 2:18.67.

Later on in the 100 yard butterfly, Dunnett shined again as he grabbed first place at 54.40. Following that, Johnston snagged second place in the 200 yard individual medley race, clocking in with a final time of 2:03.07.

On the diving side, Richard Davies finished first place in the three meter, collecting a final score of 249.98. Davies went on to place second in the one meter dive finishing with a total of 245.18 points.

Wrapping up the meet with a 200 yard freestyle relay, Wheaton clutched first place with swimmers Fredette, Lambert, Sposato and Garneau who clocked in a final of 1:29.40.

The Lyons return to the pool on Wednesday as they host Bridgewater State at 7 p.m.
