NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team opened the 2015-16 campaign with a 206-84 win over visiting Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon in the Balfour Natatorium.
Wheaton opened the meet with a win by the 200-yard medley relay 'A' team of Jesse Stewart, Rowan Rice, Jenna Hayden and Kelsey Meyer. The foursome finished in 1:55.86, while the 'B' team wasn't far behind, clocking a time of 1:57.35. The 'B' team was comprised of Skyler Dean-Lee, Molly Gibson, Courtney Leach and Rebecca Idman.
Joanna Murphy of Brandeis won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:22.69. Wheaton's Claire Bollman was the second swimmer to finish the event, clocking a time of 11:40.31, while Ceara Bowman finished in third (11:41.33).
Brandeis managed a first place finish in the 200 yard free as well, but Dean-Lee secured second place for the Lyons with a time of 2:09.04. Baynes finished close behind with a time of 2:09.10.
Wheaton swept the top three spots in the 100 yard backstroke, starting with a first place finish by Kelley Baylis. The junior finished the race in 1:04.38. Stewart came in second place in the event with a time of 1:04.98, while Joanna Zak took third with a time of 1:05.48.
The Lyons picked up another clean sweep in the 100 yard breaststroke with Rice leading the way with a time of 1:13.80. Tayla Slater finished in second (1:15.85) and Emily Reynolds (1:17.88) finished in third.
Hayden won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.72, while teammate Catie Ebsary finished in third (2:26.98). Hayden earned herself yet another first place finish, finishing in the top spot in the 200 backstroke (2:16.67) and the 100 IM (1:04.67). Dean-Lee finished in second (2:18.13) in the 200 backstroke and Lucy Frey secured the clean sweep with a third place finish (2:24.19).
Meyer and Slater finished one-two in the 50 free with Meyer setting the pace with a time of 25.93. Slater finished in 26.49. Idman earned Wheaton yet another first place finish, beating out all the competition in the 100 free with a time of 56.14. Idman also finished in second place in the 500 free with a tmie of 5:30.41.
The Lyons secured all three top spots in the 200 breaststroke, starting with a first place finish by Gibson (2:38.40). Leach finished in second place (2:43.58) and Helen Grant finished in third (2:25.48).
Rice won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:05.62, while Grant finished in second (1:05.70) and Dean-Lee third (1:06.40).
Wheaton's 200 free relay 'D' team of Baynes, Bowman, Kate Dransfield and Jessica Ryabin finished the event in second place with a time of 1:53.09.
In the three-meter dive, Katherine Conway earned notched her first first place finish of the season (186.45), while Tori Popstein took second (183.98).
The Lyons return to the pool on Nov. 6 for a match-up against Coast Guard at 7 p.m. in the Balfour Natatorium.
