Gassen, Sharon and White all double-winners for the Lyons
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team improved its New England and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) record to 2-1 on the season with an 8-1 triumph over Springfield College in conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
Wheaton sophomores David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and senior co-captain Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) all were double-winners for the Lyons on the afternoon.
In doubles play, Gassen earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory at No. 3 with teammate Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School), while White and senior co-captain Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) secured an 8-2 triumph at No. 2. Sharon and sophomore Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) rounded out doubles action with an 8-4 win at No. 1.
Sharon went on to make quick work of his opponent at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 decision. White registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3 and Gassen turned in a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 4. Sophomore Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) ousted Springfield's No. 5 by a 6-3, 6-0 decision and senior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) collected the final win of the afternoon for Wheaton at No. 6 by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
Wheaton (7-3, 2-1 NEWMAC) returns to action tomorrow at home for a non-conference match against Brandeis University at 1 p.m. Springfield (5-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) travels to Rhode Island College on Tuesday, April 8 for a 3:30 p.m. match.
