Lyons' 4-5-6 singles student-athletes close out the win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team defeated Coast Guard Academy, 6-3, in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Wheaton swept doubles play as the Lyons No. 1 pairing of sophomore Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) and senior co-captain Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) turned in a 9-7 victory. Sophomore Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and senior co-captain Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) notched an 8-5 win at No. 2, while junior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) and sophomore David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) blanked their opponents at No. 3 doubles.
Gassen was Wheaton's only double-winner on the afternoon as he posted a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 and senior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) capped the list of winners for the Lyons in singles play at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-1 score.
Wheaton (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) travels to MIT on Wednesday, April 2 for a NEWMAC clash at 4 p.m. Coast Guard (2-6, 0-1 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College next Wednesday for a conference match at 3:30 p.m.
