NORTON, Mass. – Senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists in Wheaton College's 10-5 win over MIT in Pilgrim League Men's Lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
Classmate Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass./Bancroft School) added three goals and an assist as the Lyons improved to 9-5 on the season (4-1 Pilgrim). Wheaton has won seven of its last eight contests and can secure the No. 2 seed and a home playoff contest in the Pilgrim League Tournament with a win at Mass. Maritime on Saturday. The loss drops the Engineers below the .500 mark at 6-7 (2-3 Pilgrim).
MIT opened the scoring on junior Sean Burke's (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) 14th of the season 2:01 into the contest. The Lyons responded by outscoring the Engineers 5-0 over the next 27:30 to take a 5-1 lead. Smith knotted the game at one with a man-up goal at 9:27 off a feed from junior Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy). The goal was Smith's 23rd of the season.
Sophomore Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) potted his 12th 1:04 into the second quarter to give Wheaton the lead for good. A pair of goals from Harrington and one from Smith pushed the Lyons lead to 5-0 before a tally by sophomore Ben Hessels (Laytonsville, Md./Pollesville) made it a 5-2 game at halftime. Wheaton outshot the Engineers 17-6 through the first 30 minutes.
Wheaton outscored the Engineers 4-0 in the third and went on to blank MIT for the first 20 minutes of the half. Hillman netted his 24th midway through the third to give the Lyons a 6-2 lead, and goals by senior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass./Proctor Academy) at 6:46, Smith at 3:15 and Harrington at :13 extended Wheaton's lead to 9-2 after three.
Freshman Bill Kelleher (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) broke the scoreless drought for MIT with a pair of goals at 9:28 and 7:28 to cut the Lyons lead to 9-4. Smith's third of the afternoon and team-leading 26th of the season with 7:07 made it 10-4 before Kelleher's third of the quarter and 16th of the season capped the scoring.
"I thought we did just enough to win the game," said Lyons head coach Jamie Lockard, who saw his team outshoot MIT 30-24. "It wasn't pretty at times, but we grinded out a win against a pretty good defensive team. We knew they would make us work for our goals."
Sophomore Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) recorded 11 saves to earn his ninth win of the season and lower his goals against average to 7.25. Freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) finished with a goal and an assist, senior Greg Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Chaminade) collected 10 ground balls, and junior Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H./Kents Hill School) caused a game-high three turnovers.
Kelleher paced the Engineers with three goals while senior Ernie Park (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) handed out four assists. Junior Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) stopped eight Wheaton shots to fall to 6-7. Park and senior Bryan Beller (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) each notched four ground balls.
The Lyons contest at Mass. Maritime is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Engineers host Clark Saturday at 1 p.m.
