CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) scored a three-set victory at No. 2 singles for the Wheaton College men's tennis team, which suffered an 8-1 loss to No. 28 MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon.
Sharon downed junior Brian Oldfield (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles) 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 as he improved to 9-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
The Engineers (12-3, 4-0 NEWMAC) won all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) dropped an 8-1 decision to sophomore Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va./Thomas Jefferson H.S.) at No. 1. Sharon and freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln. R.I./Wheeler School) suffered an 8-1 loss at No. 2 to junior Larry Pang (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and freshman Eugene Oh (Alparetta, Ga.). The No. 3 singles match saw juniors Kyle Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) fall 8-0 to Oldfield and classmate Tymor Hamamasy (New York, N.Y./Saint Ann's School).
In singles action, Oliver lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 to Zhang, sophomore Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia) knocked off Terrace 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and junior Matthew Skalak (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) downed sophomore Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. At No. 5, Chan fell 6-1, 6-3 to senior Robert Wheeler (Denton, Texas) while freshman Jeffrey Sperling (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) upended freshman Brendon Pickering (Merrimack, Mass./Waring School) 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Lyons (6-6, 0-5 NEWMAC) close out the 2011-12 season Sunday with a non-conference match against Colby-Sawyer College in Norton at noon. The Engineers head to Coast Guard on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
