NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
The Lyons (5-5, 0-4 NEWMAC) lone win on the afternoon came at No. 3 doubles, where juniors William Beaton (Groveland, Mass/Pentucket) and Kyle Kiernan (Darien, Conn./Darien) were 9-8 winners over freshmen John Lightner (Stuttgart, Germany) and Andrew Bryson (Prattville, Ala.).
Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) fell at No. 1 singles to senior Greg Mitchell (Keene, N.H.), 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) was tripped up by sophomore Josh Fischer (Roanoke, Texas) 7-5, 6-0.
Sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) was tripped up by senior Nick Martin (State College, Pa.) at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.Sophomore Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) was defeated by junior Blake Maurer (Fort Worth, Texas) at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) was knocked off by Lightner at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 0-6, 6-3. At No. 6 singles, freshman Brendon Pickering (Merrimack, Mass./Waring School) was defeated by Bryson 7-6, 0-6, 10-3.
Oliver and Terrace fell 8-4 to Mitchell and Martin at No. 1 singles while Sharon and Chan were downed by Maurer and Fischer 8-4.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow afternoon when they head to upstate New York to face Oneonta State. The Bears (8-3, 3-0 NEWMAC) head to Merchant Marine on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
