WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomores Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) each won their eighth singles match of the year in Wheaton College's 9-0 shutout of Assumption College in non-conference men's tennis action Tuesday afternoon.
Sharon scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over junior Matthew Drolet (Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles) at No. 2 singles while Jackson posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Patrick Murray (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) at No. 4 singles. Each won their doubles match as Sharon teamed with freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) to defeat Murray and Drolet 8-4 at No. 2 while Jackson and junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) notched an 8-4 win at No. 3 over junior Richard Jakiel (New Britain, Conn./N.W. Catholic) and senior Jeremiah Reilly (Greenville, R.I./La Salle Academy).
Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) won his sixth match of the season by downing freshman Joseph Esposito in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) won 6-1, 6-0 over Jakiel. Earlier, Oliver and Terrace posted an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over senior Nathan LaFond (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) and Esposito.
Chan won at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-1 over LaFond while junior Kyle Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) was a 7-5, 6-3 winner at No. 6 singles.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they host Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds host Anna Maria tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
