BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both Sunday afternoon at the Farwell Courts.
Wheaton grabbed a quick 2-1 lead in doubles play. Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 over freshman Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College) and senior Nissim Cohen-Sabban (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista).
At No. 2 doubles, freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) and sophomore Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) knocked off senior Danny Schneider (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and junior Rushab Tanna (Burlington, Mass./Burlington), 8-2.
The Beavers (4-6, 1-0 NEWMAC) salvaged their first point of the day at the No. 3 doubles spot, where the duo of junior Zach Ringer (Minnetonka, Minn.Hopkins) and first-year Roy Murdock (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard Westlake) notched an 8-6 win over junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) and sophomore Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien).
Wheaton (3-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) claimed its lone singles point at number four, where Jackson secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over sophomore Ferran Arimon (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit).
Doyley recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Neall at No. 1 singles, giving the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year his first conference loss since the 2009-10 campaign. Cohen-Sabban won 6-1, 6-1 over Terrace at No. 2 singles, Murdock upended Sharon 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 singles, Schneider outlasted Chan 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Beaton fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to Tanna.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. match with Springfield at the Clark Tennis Courts. Babson hosts Coast Guard Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
