POMFRET, Conn. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to Nichols College in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at The Pomfret School.
Senior captain Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) picked up the only point of the afternoon for the Lyons (1-1), rallying back after dropping the first set to defeat senior David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y./JFK) at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
Sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to freshman Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) at No. 2 singles. Classmate Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) was defeated in three sets at No. 3 singles by senior Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Sophomore Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) fell to senior Arsen Gasparyan (Miami, Fla./Europian University) at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) suffered a 8-2 loss to sophomore Isiah Prosper (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) while junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) lost 8-1 to senior Dan Saucier (Newington, Conn./Newington) at No. 6 singles.
Carella and Roode knocked off Oliver and Sharon at No. 1 doubles 8-6, Drucker and Gasparyan defeated Terrace and Chan 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and Saucier and Prosper knocked off Beaton and Jackson 8-6 at No. 3 singles.
The Lyons host Salem State on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m. The Bison (2-3) play Babson on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Wellesley, Mass.
