Lyons open spring season with 9-0 win over Salve Regina

FALMOUTH, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team opened their spring season with a 9-0 win over non-conference foe Salve Regina University Sunday afternoon.

Senior captain and reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Year Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over senior Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) at No. 1 singles. Oliver teamed with sophomore Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) to defeat Rosenfeld and junior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) dropped the first set to Isch, 6-3, and led 3-2 in the second before Isch retired. Terrace also played No. 2 singles with freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) and the pair defeated junior Kenneth McCormack (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) and sophomore Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) 8-3.

Sharon blanked McCormack at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) defeated freshman Mike Gallerani (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Chan won in straight sets over Gunning at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over senior Brian Castrichini (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) at No. 6 singles.

Beaton and classmate Kyle Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) picked up the Lyons third doubles win of the afternoon with an 8-5 win over Castrichini and Gallerani.

Wheaton (1-0) returns to action on March 8 when it travels to Pomfret, Conn. to face Nichols at 3 p.m. Salve Regina (0-8) travels to Roger Williams on Wednesday, March 21 for a 3:30 p.m. match.
