NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team improved to 3-1 this spring with an 8-1 win over Bridgewater State University in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Beard Field House.
Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) defeated freshman Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) at No. 1 singles 6-1, 7-6. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over freshman Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth).
Sophomore Daniel Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over junior Michael Kofman (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Newton South) at No. 3 singles. Classmate Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over sophomore Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over junior Nicholas Desisto (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge). The Bears (4-1) recorded their only point of the afternoon at No. 6 singles, where sophomore Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) upended junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.
Terrace and Sharon posted an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Kofman and Farrell. Jackson and Beaton defeated Esthimer and Desisto at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Chan and junior Kyle Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) won 8-4 against Bleau and Gotlib at No. 3 doubles.
The Lyons open the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) portion of their schedule on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Babson. The Bears host Western Connecticut State Saturday at 1 p.m.
