Hillman tallies four goals in Wheaton's 12-6 win at Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) scored four goals to propel the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over Lasell College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Grellier Field.

Sophomore Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) added two goals and two assists for the Lyons, who evened their record at 3-3 and matched last season's win total. Senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) also potted a pair of goals while sophomore netminder Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) recorded nine saves to earn the win.

Lasell took a 1-0 lead 16 seconds into the contest on a goal by junior Dylan Gray (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), but the Lyons answered with five goals and closed the quarter with a 5-1 lead. Junior Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy) evened the game at one with his fifth goal of the season at 9:56, followed by Hillman's first of the game at 7:36, Shields' fifth marker of 2012 at 4:11, Hillman's second of the game at 2:13, and freshman Sean Finn's (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) second of the season at 1:13. Doherty picked up a pair of apples during the run.

Gray's second of the contest 34 seconds into the second quarter cut the Lyons lead to three goals. Wheaton answered with goals from Hillman at 11:46 and Shields at 5:27 to push its lead to 7-2. Lasell freshman Eric Marcantonio (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) closed the first-half scoring with a tally with seven seconds remaining. The Lyons held a slim 12-11 edge in shots through the first 30 minutes.

Freshman Robbie Palazzo (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) opened the scoring in the third with a goal at 13:17 that got the Lasers to within three (7-4). Wheaton responded with five-straight goals to take a 12-4 lead and seal the win. Doherty started the run with his second of the contest at 5:58, followed by two each from Harrington and Smith.

Doherty finished with a goal and two assists while Compton had a goal and an assist. Wheaton outshot the Lasers 24-22 and received nine ground balls by senior David Schroeder (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North).

Senior Adam Foss (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) collected a game-high 14 ground balls for Lasell. Junior Don Berube (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) got the start in goal for the Lasers (1-4) and made nine saves.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, March 31 with a 3 p.m. contest against Clark (Mass.). Lasell hosts Norwich this Saturday at 2 p.m.
