Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - Junior Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy), sophomore Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth), and freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) each scored twice in Wheaton College's 11-10 loss at Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
Seniors David Schroeder (Nashua, N.H.) and Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass./Bancroft School) tallied a goal and an assist each for the Lyons (1-2), who trailed 11-6 midway through the fourth quarter before rallying for four goals to climb to within one with 1:37 remaining.
Hillman started the comeback with a goal at 4:50 off a feed from Harrington. Schroeder tallied 15 seconds later to bring the Lyons to within three (11-8), and goals by senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) at 2:06 and Hillman at 1:37 made it a one-goal game. The Lyons made one final push but Schroeder's shot with 34 seconds remaining was turned aside.
Junior Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) racked up seven points (4-3-7) to lead the Hawks while sophomore Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) finished with five points (2-3-5).
Powers scored a pair of goals in the opening 5:54 to stake Roger Williams to a 2-0 lead. After Compton cut the Hawks lead in half with a goal at 8:58, Nessa and senior Dan Klink (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) answered back for RWU to push its lead to 4-1. Shields marker off a pass from Schroeder with 3:49 left in the first capped the scoring for the quarter with the Lyons trailing 4-2.
Each team scored twice in the second as the Hawks took a 6-4 lead into the break. In the third, two goals from Powers and one from Nessa helped Roger Williams build a 9-5 lead at the end of three. Compton scored the only goal of the third for the Lyons.
Shields opened the fourth quarter scoring 22 seconds in, but goals by Klink at 10:10 and freshman Michael Kimmy (Bristol, R.I./LaSalle) at 8:28 staked the Hawks to an 11-6 lead before Wheaton began its comeback.
The Hawks (2-0) outshot the Lyons 41-21 and forced 32 turnovers. Wheaton held a slim 47-45 edge in ground balls, led by eight from senior Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H./Kents Hill School) and six from Casey. Sophomore Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) recorded 13 saves for Wheaton while freshman Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn./Brien-McMahon) stopped eight shots.
Wheaton travels to Newark, Del. for a 1 p.m. contest with Manhattanville at the University of Delaware Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Hawks head south to Virginia for a 7 p.m. contest at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday.
