Box Score REHOBOTH, Mass.- The Wheaton College field hockey team fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Babson College by a 5-2 count on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day at Faxon Field.
The Lyons slipped to 3-12 on the season and 0-7 in the league to start their three-game homestand, while the Beavers, who are receiving votes in the most recent National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, are 12-4 and 7-0.
Junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the season for Wheaton. Babson junior and leading scorer Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) notched a hat trick to up her season total to 24 goals.
The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 edge with goals from sophomore Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Lockwood coming at 7:29 and 11:05, respectively. Freshman Melanie Jordan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) made the score 3-0 following her unassisted tally with 23 seconds to play before the break.
Lockwood extended the Beaver advantage to four goals with her second marker at 51:17. Wheaton responded not even a minute later, when senior Kirsten Russell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) converted a pass from sophomore Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) to narrow her team's deficit to 4-1.
Lockwood's third and final goal took place at 60:37. Rocha finished the scoring at 67:51, receiving a feed from junior Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) to make the score 5-2.
Wheaton junior Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) finished with a career-high 20 stops after having a then-career-high 19 saves on Tuesday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Beaver junior Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) made seven stops in the victory.
Babson held a 36-13 advantage in shots, including a 23-6 first-half margin, and an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Lyons turn right back around tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. home game against non-conference foe Union College at 2:00 p.m.
