Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team had its seven-game win streak against Babson College come to an end during Saturday's Pilgrim League contest, as the Lyons fell to the Beavers for the first time since 2005 with a 19-14 loss at MacDowell Field.
Handed its first conference loss of the spring, Wheaton slips to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the Pilgrim, while Babson climbs back to the .500 mark at 5-5 and 1-1.
Seniors Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) paced the Lyons with four goals apiece, with Landers providing two assists and Cederberg one, while junior Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored once with three helpers.
Sophomore Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) turned in a goal and two assists, while freshman Jesse O'Neil (Charlestown, Mass./Boston Latin School) was credited with a season-high-tying 14 stops.
Sophomore Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I./Providence Country Day School) led the hosts with a game-high five goals and two assists, while three other Beavers recorded three tallies apiece. Classmate James Whalen (Westwood, Mass./Pomfret School) finished with 15 saves in net.
Wheaton got off to a fast start, as Landers and freshman Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) each found the back of the net within the first 2:08 of the opening quarter. Babson knotted the game at two by 6:35 before the Lyons responded with two more for a 4-2 edge with 1:29 left in the period.
The Beavers scored with nine ticks left in the first quarter to spark a 4-0 run that gave them a 7-4 advantage with 9:19 to play prior to the intermission. A Wheaton man-up goal at 8:35 and a McNamara tally 1:02 after that brought the Lyons within 7-6, but Babson scored three straight markers and five of the period's final seven tallies to lead 12-8 at the break.
A pair of Wheaton goals to start the third made the score 12-10 before the Beavers recorded their 13th goal with one tick on the clock. The hosts then rattled off six of the fourth period's first eight tallies, capturing the game's largest advantage at 19-12 with 1:02 remaining.
The Lyons don't return to the field until next Saturday when they host Pilgrim League power Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. Wheaton and the Pride have met in the league championship game each of the last three seasons.
