Wheaton shuts out NEWMAC host Springfield to extend winning streak

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches by shutting out New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) host Springfield College, 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Appleton Courts.

The Lyons improved to 5-4 on the season, including 2-0 in conference play, while the Pride fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Wheaton took a quick 3-0 lead, posting a pair of 8-3 doubles victories, with senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) winning at two and senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) emerging victorious in the third position.

The top doubles tandem of senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) and junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) picked up an 8-4 triumph for the sweep.

In singles action, Oliver led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the top spot, while Krantz picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory at two.  Altman posted a 6-2, 6-3 win from the fifth position.

Sharon experienced some trouble in the opening set at four but surrendered just one game in the second set to secure a 7-5, 6-1 triumph, while sophomore Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) prevailed in a first-set tiebreaker to notch a 7-6, 6-4 victory at six.  Poulin needed a third set to pull past his opponent in the third slot, winning 6-0, 2-6, 10-5.

The Lyons will be back in action on Friday afternoon, hosting the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta men and women at 2:45 p.m.
