Harrington's double-overtime winner provides Lyons with key win at MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Wheaton College men's lacrosse junior Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass./Bancroft School) scored with 1:47 left in double overtime to give his Lyons a critical 11-10 win at Pilgrim League foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field.

Keeping its playoff hopes alive for the four-team league tournament, Wheaton snapped its four-game losing skid to improve to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.  The Engineers fell to 4-6 and 2-2.

Harrington's lone goal of the afternoon proved to be Wheaton's most significant, as he converted a feed from sophomore Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), who finished with three markers and three assists.  Junior Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) totaled two tallies and four helpers.

Senior Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) recorded two goals and one assist, and classmate Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) found the back of the net twice.  Freshman Jesse O'Neil (Charlestown, Mass./Boston Latin School) matched his season high in saves with 20, including making 11 stops in the second half.

MIT seniors Dan Piemont (Summit, N.J./Deerfield) and Eric Zuk (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) combined to score seven goals, and sophomore Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) turned aside nine shots.

Despite losing 21 of 24 face-offs and getting outshot by a 39-26 margin, Wheaton was in control for most of the first half.  The Lyons jumped out to a 4-0 lead by 2:59 of the opening stanza, as four different players scored.  Doherty had a goal and an assist in the run, and McNamara posted two helpers.

After MIT scored the first quarter's final goal to make the score 4-1, Wheaton answered with two straight markers, including one man-up tally, for a 6-1 advantage with 11:28 to go before the break.  The Engineers used a 3-0 run to get as close as 6-4 before Landers scored a man-up goal at 3:46.  Piemont's pair of tallies in the last 2:13 pulled MIT to 7-6 at halftime.

After Zuk's goal 40 seconds into the third quarter knotted the score at seven, MIT scored three of the game's next four tallies for a 10-8 edge with 11:14 remaining in regulation.  A pair of McNamara markers just 1:09 apart forged a 10-all tie at 8:11, but neither team scored during the final eight-plus minutes of the fourth quarter or entire four-minute overtime period.  After getting outshot in regulation by 17, Wheaton answered the bell in the overtimes with six of the extra sessions' eight attempts.

The Lyons finish out the regular season one week from today at Pilgrim school Clark University at 1:00 p.m.  Wheaton assures itself a tournament berth with a victory.
