Lyons make it 10 straight after blanking Endicott, 5-0

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team won its 10th consecutive match after posting a 5-0 shutout of non-conference opponent Endicott College during the teams' first meeting on Tuesday afternoon inside Beard Field House, as the match moved indoors due to inclement weather.

Equaling a 10-match winning streak from the 2004-05 academic year, the Lyons remained perfect in the month of April while improving to 11-4.  Endicott fell to 9-7.

Playing to decision, Wheaton managed to sweep doubles action, with two of the three matches being close.  Senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) had the least difficulty of the three teams, recording an 8-3 victory in the third position.

Senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) won 8-6 at second doubles, while senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) and junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) needed a tiebreaker to emerge victorious in the top spot, as the duo notched a 9-8 win.

Krantz and Oliver collected Wheaton's needed two singles triumphs, with Krantz allowing one game in the second slot and Oliver turning in a 6-1, 6-2 victory at one.  Sophomore Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) won 6-4 in his opening set at five and held a 2-1 second-set lead when the Lyons collected their deciding point.

Wheaton is back in action on Saturday for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) home match against nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 1:00 p.m.  The Engineers are ranked 23rd in the country and seventh in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).  The winner will be crowned NEWMAC regular season champion.
