MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team had its
five-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday against host
Tufts University, as the region's 19th-ranked team was swept by the
13th-ranked Jumbos. The rankings are by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA).
The Lyons fell to 13-4 in the setback, while Tufts evened its
season mark at 6-6.
In third doubles, juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale,
NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford,
CT/Joseph A. Foran) played in the tightest match before
losing 8-6, as the tandem had its five-match winning stretch
snapped.
Senior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and
sophomore Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering)
suffered an 8-4 setback in the top position.
In singles play, senior James Little (Mount
Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) pushed his opponent to a
tiebreaker at number two before losing in straight sets, while
Hudgins dropped a 7-5 decision in the opening set at three.
Wheaton is next in action this weekend for the New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at the
United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
Seeded second, the Lyons will face the winner of the match between
the third-seeded hosts and sixth seed Clark University in
Saturday's semifinals at 10:30 a.m.
