NEW LONDON, CT- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team could
not overcome an early five-goal deficit, as the Lyons fell to
sixth-ranked and undefeated Connecticut College, 15-4 on Monday
afternoon at Silfen Field. Wheaton slipped to 4-5, while the
Camels, who are ranked by the United States Intercollegiate
Lacrosse Association (USILA), are 13-0.
Junior Ben Cederberg
(Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) scored twice and added an assist for
the Lyons, classmate Chris Landers
(Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) notched a goal and a
helper, and junior Duncan Smith
(Centerport, NY/Harborfields) tallied. Senior Schuyler Horn
(New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) tied a season
high by making 16 saves for the second straight game.
Twelve different players scored for Connecticut College, as
junior Mark Mangano (Basking Ridge, NJ/Morristown-Beard
School) and freshmen Andrew Berry (Moorestown,
NJ/Moorestown) and Mike Giambanco (Massapequa,
NY/Massapequa) tallied a team-high twice apiece. Sophomore
Rob Moccia (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) made one
save during the opening half while notching the win.
The Camels scored the first five goals of the game by the time
4:06 remained in the opening quarter, with the final two markers
coming in a 16-second span. Smith got the Lyons on the board at
2:42 thanks to a Cederberg assist before Cederberg tallied at 2:07
with the visitors on a man-up opportunity to make it 5-2, but the
hosts countered with the next three goals.
After trailing 10-3 at halftime, Wheaton was held to just a
Cederberg marker with 8:17 remaining in the game. The Lyons limited
the Camels to four goals in the second half.
Wheaton returns to Pilgrim League action on Wednesday when it
hosts Lasell College at 4:00 p.m. in Mirrione Stadium.
