NEWPORT, RI- The Wheaton College men's tennis team extended its
winning streak to five matches with a 7-2 triumph over Salve Regina
University at the Leroy Avenue Courts on Thursday. The Lyons, who
moved to 7-2 on the season, handed the Seahawks just their third
setback in the last seven matches, as the hosts slipped to 4-7.
Wheaton swept doubles in carrying a 3-0 lead into singles play.
In the third position, juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale,
NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford,
CT/Joseph A. Foran) produced an 8-3 victory, the most
lopsided of the three finals.
Senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert
Island) and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro,
MA/Home Schooled) earned an 8-5 win at two, while senior
Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and sophomore
Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) rallied for a
9-7 win at one.
During singles play, Altman, Hudgins and Krantz won in straight
sets, while Little notched another point for the Lyons. Krantz
dispatched his opponent, 6-1, 6-2 at five, Altman picked up a 7-5,
6-2 victory in the sixth position, and Hudgins captured the
third-singles contest, 7-5, 6-1. Little dropped his opening set at
two, 7-6, before his opponent retired.
In the first singles position, Oliver suffered a three-set loss
to senior Andrew Martin (Glastonbury,
CT/Glastonbury), as the Seahawk rallied for a 3-6, 6-3,
10-8 win.
Wheaton is back in action on Saturday, as the Lyons head to the
United States Coast Guard Academy for a 1:00 p.m. New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
