SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team opened
its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
slate with a 7-2 triumph over Springfield College on Saturday. The
Lyons moved to 5-2 overall, while the Pride fell to 2-7.
The visitors nabbed a 2-1 edge after three close doubles
matches. Senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert
Island) and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro,
MA/Home Schooled) won 8-5 in the second position, while
juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight
School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A.
Foran) nabbed an 8-6 win at three.
In the top position, senior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge,
MA/Uxbridge) and sophomore Neall Oliver (Portland,
ME/Deering) suffered a narrow 8-6 setback.
The Lyons pulled away in singles play, earning four of its five
wins in straight sets. Oliver yielded only three games during a
top-spot victory, Little earned a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at two, and
Hudgins corralled a 6-2, 6-3 win in the third slot. Krantz won 6-3,
6-3 at five.
Altman rallied for victory in the sixth position, completing a
4-6, 6-2, 10-6 win. At four, Poulin lost a marathon match 5-7, 7-6,
11-13.
Wheaton hosts Bridgewater State College on Tuesday at 3:30
p.m.
