BABSON PARK, MA- Junior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford,
CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made two saves in the final
1:12 of regulation to protect a one-goal lead, elevating the
Wheaton College men's lacrosse team over Babson College, 12-11 on
Sunday at MacDowell Field in each squad's Pilgrim League regular
season finale. The Lyons have won six straight, the program's
longest string of victories since 1996.
At 6-6 overall, Wheaton finished 6-1 in the conference to nail
down the second seed in this coming week's Pilgrim League
Tournament, as the Blue and White will host number-three
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a Wednesday
semifinal at 4:00 p.m. The Beavers finished the regular season 5-10
and 4-3, as they earned the fourth seed and will travel to
top-seeded Springfield College for the semifinals.
Babson scored the first two goals of the contest by 6:04 of the
opening quarter before senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury,
MA/Duxbury) helped the Lyons draw even, tallying at 4:22
and assisting freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield,
MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) with 1:50 to go.
However, the Beavers netted a marker 44 seconds later to carry a
3-2 edge into the quarter break.
Junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury
School) netted the tying goal at 13:48 of the second
before Babson went up 5-3 by 8:09, but the Lyons responded with a
6-0 run. Garceau tallied again at 4:39, and the final five Wheaton
goals came in a 1:07 stretch. Sophomore Chris Landers
(Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) scored with 2:53
remaining, and classmate Ben Cederberg (Duxbury,
MA/Duxbury) tallied nine seconds later. Sophomore
Duncan Smith (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) got on
the scoreboard at 1:59, and McNamara notched goals at 1:52 and 1:46
to make it 9-5.
However, Babson countered with a 5-0 run of its own, scoring
twice in the final 56 seconds of the half to draw within two at the
intermission, tallying a pair in the opening 5:10 of the third
quarter, and then grabbing a 10-9 advantage thanks to the go-ahead
marker with five ticks remaining in the period. After yielding
seven goals in the second, the Beavers blanked Wheaton in the third
quarter.
The Lyons snapped an 18:35 scoreless stretch when Cederberg
tallied off junior Drew Schaffer's (New Haven, CT/Loomis
Chaffee School) assist at 13:10 of the fourth quarter,
knotting the contest at 10, and Schaffer put Wheaton back in front
for good with a marker 57 seconds later.
Babson had a trio of shots miss the target during a 13-second
span with a little less than four minutes to go, including ringing
an attempt off the post, before McNamara gave Wheaton some
breathing room by converting a Cederberg pass with 2:24 left. The
Beavers made it 12-11 at 1:36 and won the ensuing draw, and Horn
denied a Babson tying try at 1:12 before another Beaver picked up
the ground ball and hit the crossbar. With 45 seconds remaining,
Horn snuffed out the final attempt by the hosts, and Wheaton gained
possession.
McNamara paced all players with four goals, Cederberg totaled
two goals and two assists, while Garceau had a pair of markers and
a helper while going 11-for-14 on face-offs. Gomer turned in a
marker, an assist and seven face-off victories, as Wheaton won
18-of-26 draws, while Landers had a goal and two helpers. Schaffer
notched a goal and an assist, and Horn made 16 saves, as Babson
held a 54-42 advantage in shots.
Senior E.J. Peterson (Framingham,
MA/Framingham) led Babson with three goals, while
sophomores Andrew Packer (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve
Academy) and Armand Wilson (Fairfield,
CT/Avon) notched a pair apiece. Classmate Mike
Saucier (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) made nine saves in
relief but took the loss.
