CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team moved
into sole possession of second place in the Pilgrim League thanks
to Wednesday night's 9-7 come-from-behind victory at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) on Roberts Field.
The Lyons, who matched the program's fourth-longest winning
streak at five games, improved to 5-6 overall and 5-1 in league
play, while the Engineers fell into a third-place tie with Babson
College. Slipping to 7-6 and 4-2, MIT had its five-game
winning stretch come to a halt.
Wheaton needed to overcome four deficits to earn the victory,
including responding from being down 4-2 entering the second
quarter and 6-5 nearly four minutes into the third. Sophomore
Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), who led the
Lyons with three goals and an assist, had a hand in erasing all
four disadvantages. Cederberg's goal at 9:58 of the second
off a pass from junior Warren Garceau (Guilford,
CT/Canterbury School) knotted things at four, while his
third-quarter tally after a feed from freshman Mike
Harrington (Sturbridge, MA/Bancroft School) made the score
6-6 at 9:00.
Wheaton fell behind from the onset, trailing 1-0 two minutes
into the first before Cederberg assisted sophomore Chris
Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) at the 10:39 mark
for the first of five ties. After the hosts went back on top,
the Lyons again responded, this time with senior defenseman
Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) recording
his first point of the season on a feed to Cederberg with 7:04 to
play in the opening quarter.
MIT tacked on a pair of goals in the final 4:10 of the first
before Wheaton answered with all three of the second period's
tallies. Junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis
Chaffee School) scored at 10:04 to bring the Lyons within
one, while Garceau won the ensuing face-off before dishing to
Cederberg for the tying marker just six seconds later. Senior
Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) provided Wheaton
with its first advantage at the 3:14 mark.
The Blue and White's lead proved to be short-lived, however, as
the Engineers scored twice in 56 seconds to take a 6-5 edge 3:53
into the third period. The visitors took control from there,
rattling off four straight goals while holding MIT scoreless for
over 24 minutes. Gomer's unassisted tally with 2:07 remaining
in the third put the Lyons in front for good, as Wheaton carried a
7-6 edge into the fourth.
In the final frame, neither team scored for the first 11:29
until sophomore Duncan Smith (Centerport,
NY/Harborfields) picked up the game-winner at 3:31.
Schaffer's second goal of the game just 43 seconds later provided
extra insurance, as the Engineers tallied at 1:47 to complete the
scoring.
Junior goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford,
CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) improved to 5-4 behind six
saves, while MIT junior Garth Grove (Jarrettsville,
MD/North Harford) had 12 stops.
Wheaton concludes its regular season on Saturday at Babson,
where a Blue and White victory secures it a home playoff game as
the second seed in next week's league tournament. Game time
is slated for 1:00 p.m.
