BABSON PARK, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team finished
out its regular season slate with a 5-3 setback at Babson College
in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play
at Farwell Courts on Saturday.
The Lyons completed their NEWMAC schedule with a 3-2 record and
take a 10-6 overall mark into this week's league tournament. As the
third seed, they will host number-six Clark University on Thursday
at 3:30 p.m. Babson, which has one league match remaining, improved
to 9-8 and 4-0.
Wheaton took a 2-1 advantage into singles action thanks to a
pair of narrow doubles victories. Sophomores Harry Altman
(Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz
(Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) combined on a 9-7 triumph in
the third position, while senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town
& Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle
Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) notched a 9-8 victory at
two.
In the top spot, junior James Little (Mount Desert,
ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Neall Oliver
(Portland, ME/Deering) lost by an 8-5 final.
Babson captured four of the five singles matches that were
played to completion to cap its comeback. Altman corralled his
team-leading 13th victory of the season in the fourth position,
earning a quick 6-0, 6-2 win. However, four teammates fell in
straight sets.
