Nunnink Finishes 30th at NCAA Northeast Regional to Lead Men's Fencing

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Phillip Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for 30th in the foil at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Vassar College at Walker Field House in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Nunnink received a bye into the second round of competition as one of the top-27 ranked fencers in the region. He earned one victory in six bouts in the second round. Nunnink defeated Sacred Heart University junior Chaissen Costello, 5-4. He was defeated by Boston College first year Yikai Lu (Shanghai, China), 5-3, and also suffered 5-2 losses to both first year Caleb Jeon (Los Altos, Calif.) and senior Henry Zhang (Scarsdale, N.Y.) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brandeis University junior Jackson Sullivan (Somerville, Mass.) registered a 5-1 win over Nunnink and first year Sebastian Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came away with a 5-0 victory over him for Saint John's University (N.Y.).

Sophomore Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) advanced to the second round of foil after winning three of four bouts in the opening round. He defeated Vassar sophomore Alexander Gobbo (Santa Ana, Calif.), 5-2, before outpointing Hunter College junior David Xing (New York, N.Y.), 5-3. Smith's third triumph was a 4-1 decision over Brandeis sophomore Alex Fortune (Alto, Mich.). Smith's only defeat was to Long Island University sophomore Brendan Wadley, 5-3. 

Smith was unable to come away with a win in the second round, however and placed 35th overall for the day. 

Wheaton first year Charles Pedersen (Shoreham, N.Y.) competed in the first round of foil, but was unable to advance to the second round, despite a 5-4 victory over LIU sophomore Lovro Prosoli (Zagreb, Croatia). He finished 37th overall. Pedersen was downed by Brandeis senior Michael Yerokhin (Paramus, N.J.), 5-3, and suffered 5-2 losses to Vassar sophomore Ethan Capra (Austin, Texas) and Sacred Heart sophomore Alexander Ligos (Basking Ridge, N.J.).

First year Solomon Taylor (Evanston, Ill.) made his Regionals debut for the Lyons and claimed a 5-2 win over Vassar sophomore Kahlil Salome in foil. St. John's junior Bronislav Petrov and Harvard University first year Steven Miall (Boston, Mass.) each recorded 5-2 wins over Taylor. Taylor also fell to Costello, 5-1. Taylor was unable to advance, but finished 38th overall. 

First year Jun-Ho Chen (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up a win in the epee first round for Wheaton, but did not advance to the second round. He came away with a decisive 5-2 outcome against Vassar senior Brian Li (Tacoma, Wash.). Chen battled in a pair of 5-3 losses to Brandeis sophomores Hunter Yu (Toronto, Ont.) and Lucas Strauss (Boulder, Colo.).

Sophomore Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) qualified for the sabre at the Regionals for the Lyons and finished 44th overall. He suffered a pair of 5-2 defeats to Vassar sophomore Karthik Shankar (Bethesda, Md.) and junior Tai Flot (Jersey City, N.J.). Smink was taken down by a score of 5-1 to both Boston College sophomore Lukas Eichhorn (Atlanta, Ga.) and MIT first year Rohan Dalal (King of Prussia, Pa.
