NORTON, Mass. — Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencer Phillip Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) was named All-America Honorable Mention by the United States Fencing Coaches Association, it was announced by the organization.
The honor was in addition to Nunnink being named the Co-Fencer of the Year by the Northeast Fencing Conference and a First Team All-Star. Nunnink becomes the first fencer in school history to earn All-America honors two years in a row after being tabbed an Honorable Mention selection last year as well.
Nunnink posted a 49-28 record on the season for a .636 winning percentage. Prior to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship, the Finance major posted a remarkable stretch where he dominated to win 14 of 15 foil bouts over five matches for a sterling 93.33% winning mark during the NFC one-day conference competition on February 28 before being tabbed the NFC Co-Fencer of the Year. Nunnink rolled over his opponents, winning 10 straight bouts, before finally falling in a 5-4 decision for his lone defeat. Nunnink's NFC performance propelled him into the second round of the NCAA Northeast Regional on the back of a first round bye. The Missouri native placed 30th at the Regional Championship. The Rockhurst High School graduate registered 17 matches where he won at least two of three bouts during the season, including nine 3-0 sweeps in the foil. Nunnink posted a 17-10 overall mark at the Schiller Duels, hosted by Northwestern University on January 31-February 1 and swept through University of the Incarnate Word, University of Detroit Mercy and Cleveland State University.
Nunnink has been outstanding at Wheaton, owning a 103-57 record (64.4%) over the past two seasons.
