Nunnink Named Scholar of Distinction by USFCA; Quail, Smith, Solomon Tabbed to All-Academic Team

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencing team member Phillip Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) was named a Scholar of Distinction by the United States Fencing Coaches Association in addition to being tabbed to the All-Academic Team along with Jonathan Quail (Scotia, N.Y.), Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) and Solomon Taylor (Evanston, Ill.), it was announced by the USFCA.

To qualify for the All-Academic Team, competitors must have competed for one academic year and earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3. Scholars of Distinction must have achieved a GPA of at least 3.7. 

Nunnink was named a Scholar of Distinction last year as well. 

Nunnink is a sophomore finance major, who earned All-America Honorable Mention accolades from the United States Fencing Coaches Association, in addition to being named the Northeast Fencing Conference Co-Fencer of the Year in foil. 

Quail is a first year History major as well and put together a 21-68 mark in sabre competition for Wheaton. He recorded a winning record in six dual matches in his rookie campaign. 

Smith is a sophomore Business major and posted a 53-42 record, including a streak of 10 straight wins during the Schiller duals on January 31. Smith also won three bouts at the NCAA Regional Championship on March 8 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Taylor is a first year Political Science major and registered a 17-38 record in foil bouts. He also boasted a winning record in six different matches for the Lyons.

Wheaton finished the season 2-27 in its second varsity campaign.
