Men's Volleyball Falls to Curry, 3-0

Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's volleyball team fell to Curry College inside Emerson Gym on Tuesday afternoon. The Colonels swept the Lyons 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-21) despite 10 kills from first year outside hitter R. Bennett Chiappetta (Middlefield, Conn.).

Wheaton falls to 9-13 in its inaugural season, while the Colonels improve to 13-13 with the win.

Chiappetta was the offensive leader for the Lyons with 10 kills on .208 hitting. Sophomore Connor Lloyd (Swansea, Mass.) had nine kills, seven digs and one service ace to narrowly miss the double-double, while first year Ryan Rathbun (North Kingstown, R.I.) put down seven kills with one block. Sophomore Jack Kenyon (Westerly, R.I.) had the team in digs with eight, while first year setter Jacob Hoy (Essex Junction, Vt.) finished with 29 assists.

Sophomore Chris Milfort (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) had the game-high in kills with 15 on .324 hitting. First year Nyko Whitaker (West Palm Beach, Fla.) narrowly missed a double-double with 33 assists and nine digs. First year libero Braden Alpert (Hollywood, Fla.) had the game-high in digs with 12 to lead his side's defense.

Wheaton opened up the contest with a 5-1 run to start the first set. Kenyon capped off the run with a kill after Chiappetta pounded three kills in a row, but the Colonels wriggled their way to an 8-8 tie following a Milfort ace. Curry crept ahead, but Lloyd knocked down his first kill of the game to keep it tied at 10-10. Curry again pulled ahead, but Hoy put an ace past the Colonels to bring the Lyons within one point at 14-13. A 6-2 run for Curry backed by three kills from Milfort saw the visitors reach 20 first, but two late kills from Lloyd and one apiece from Rathbun and Chiappetta saw them claw back the distance. It was not enough to complete the late comeback as Whitaker slipped a dump past the block off the initial touch. The Colonels took set one 25-22 despite Wheaton's opening flurry.

The Lyons began the second set with the lead as well after Chiappetta put down their first point. A kill from Kenyon, an ace from Hoy and a few attacking errors by Curry allowed the Lyons to jump ahead to a 6-3 lead. Their lead ballooned after a Rathbun kill and a missed serve by the Colonels to give the Lyons an 8-4 advantage. Curry strung together a 4-0 scoring run to make it close, but Lloyd was able to keep his opponents at bay with a kill to make it 10-9. Wheaton pushed their advantage up to 14-11, but the Colonels came back after back-to-back kills from Milfort. Whitaker knocked down a kill soon after to tie the game at 18-18. Milfort tipped a kill past the Lyons to give Curry its first lead of the set. Milfort scored another kill to put his team on set point, but the Lyons put up a valiant last stand. Chiappetta pounded a kill before the Colonels were forced into two errors to tie the set up at 24-24. Wheaton regained the lead at 25-24, but a kill from Milfort and two more Curry points saw the home team drop the frame at 27-25.

The two teams tangled in the third set, keeping pace with each other up to a 9-9 tie. Milfort put down a kill right after, which was compounded by a few Wheaton errors to give the visitors a 13-10 lead. Chiappetta was able to put down a kill before the Colonels missed an attack to bring the Lyons closer, but they would not regain the lead. Curry went on a 6-2 run soon after to climb ahead even further to 23-16. Kenyon put down two more kills late, but the effort was too little too late as the Lyons fell to the Colonels 25-21 in the final set, securing the sweep for the visitors.

Wheaton will take the floor in Boston on March 27 as it heads up to the heart of the city to take on Emerson College at 7:00 p.m. Curry will travel to Beverly, Mass. to face Endicott College for a match on April 3 at 6:00 p.m.
