BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore
Jack Kenyon (Westerly, R.I.) led the way for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's volleyball team as he put down 15 kills to help the Lyons sweep Emerson College 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) in Boston on Friday evening.
Wheaton earned their 10th win to improve to 10-13 in their first season, while Emerson fell to 4-12 with the loss.
Kenyon had the game-high in kills with 15 on an incredible .583 hitting percentage. The sophomore also added six digs to lead the Lyons, but first years
Jordan Rodriguez (East Providence, R.I.),
Jacob Hoy (Essex Junction, Vt.) and
R. Bennett Chiappetta (Middlefield, Conn.) each had five digs. Hoy also tossed a game-high 23 assists, while Rodriguez finished with a .500 hitting percentage and four kills.Â
Emerson sophomore Mario Cielo-Salinas (Oswego, Ill.) led the Lions with eight kills on .136 hitting. Junior Riley Goldman (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) was just behind his teammate with seven kills while first year Caleb Ott (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with five. Senior Semaj' Byrd (Rockledge, Fla.) held down the defense with a game-high eight digs while first year Ryan Chen (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with 17 assists.
Wheaton and Emerson exchanged kills at the start of the game, staying even at 4-4 in the opening phase. Kenyon put down a kill to nudge the Lyons ahead, and they exploded for a 5-0 run afterwards. Kenyon stayed hot with two more kills as the Lyons stretched their lead to 15-9. With the large lead, Wheaton was able to go point-for-point with their hosts and win the opening set, 25-20. Kenyon added three more kills down the stretch while Chiappetta put down a pair to help the Lyons to a win in the first frame.Â
Emerson scored the first point of the second set, but made an error immediately after to keep the game even. The game stayed even until both sides were at 12 points before Chiappetta and Rodriguez put down kills to give Wheaton a 14-12 lead. The Lyons held on to their advantage momentarily, but the hosts were able to tie the set once again at 18-18. Cielo-Salinas gave Emerson the lead with a kill, but the Lyons responded with a 7-1 run behind two Kenyon kills and two Rodriguez aces to claim victory, 25-20.Â
The third set saw Wheaton open up a lead from the start as they took an 8-3 lead behind a number of Emerson errors. Kenyon and Hoy each notched kills as the Lyons pushed their lead to 16-5. A timeout for Emerson saw them regain their composure, and they began to close in on Wheaton. Emerson strung a 16-6 run together to tie the final set at 21-21. Goldman and Cielo-Salinas each had two kills during the run, but the lion's share of the points were caused by Wheaton errors. Wheaton called timeout, and Emerson missed their serve to give Wheaton the 22-21 lead, and sophomore
Jimmy Ciummo (Barrington, R.I.) followed up the miss with a service ace. Kenyon compounded the advantage with two straight kills, and the Lyons came away with a victory in the third set despite the surge from Emerson.
Wheaton will take the floor on Thursday, April 2nd in their penultimate home game as they host Nichols at 7:00 pm. Emerson will host Elms College on Tuesday, March 31st in their penultimate game of the season.Â
