CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team on day two of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool in Cambridge, Mass.
The Lyons are currently in fifth place overall with a score of 200 points, behind fourth-place Babson College's total of 232. Host MIT sits atop the standings with 615 points.
Stone led three top-11 finishers in the 500 for Wheaton. She touched the wall at 5:08.60, while classmate Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) placed seventh with a time of 5:12.41. Senior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) posted a mark of 5:09.56 in the consolation finals to finish 11th overall for the Lyons.
Senior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) clocked in with a personal-record mark of 2:10.37 to lead Wheaton in the 200-yard individual medley with a 12th-place effort.
Stone, Lambert-Shemo and Dalton combined with junior Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.) to record a season-best time of 1:38.40 to place fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay to open the night for the Lyons. First years Lauren Bullins (Lenexa, Kan.) and Ella Werbecki (Scituate, R.I.) combined with senior Grace Chin (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) and first year Amani Sodhi (Farmingdale, N.Y.) for a time of 1:43.55 in the race to finish 16th and add to Wheaton's point total.
The Lyons closed the night by finishing eighth in the 400-yard medley relay behind Dalton in the backstroke, St. Jean in the breaststroke, junior Kaleigh Morton (Milford, Conn.) in the butterfly and Van Holland in the freestyle anchor to post a clip of 4:07.81. Werbecki, junior Kelsey Callaghan (Vestal, N.Y.), Chin and Bullins registered a mark of 4:19.65 to finish 17th in the race for Wheaton.
The Lyons return to the pool tomorrow for the day three preliminaries in Cambridge at 10:00 a.m.
