Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team fell to No. 4 Chapman University, 27-3, this evening in the Bruno Invite hosted by Brown University at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons fall to 0-6 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 2-7.
Chapman fired 45 shots in the match, while Wheaton attempted 17.
Sophomore utility player Jack Ruggiero (Hamden, Conn.) and first years Ayden Guess (Alvin, Texas) and Hudson Kosiba (Birmingham, Mich.) each netted a goal for the Lyons. Ruggiero added an assist and a steal, while Guess came up with a trio of steals and Kosiba drew an exclusion. First year goalie Nic Boyer (Toledo, Ohio) made 12 saves for Wheaton.
First year center Boston Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Joshua Brown (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) each tallied three goals to lead the Panthers. Fisher added three steals and Brown assisted on a goal and made a steal. First year utility player River Lyon (Pacific Grove, Calif.) scored a pair of goals to go with four assists and three steals and junior attacker Jayce Gallegos (University Place, Wash.) netted two goals in addition to handing out two assists and coming up with a theft. First year goalie David Yacoub (Lake Forest, Calif.) stopped six of eight shots and made three steals, while Davin Castillo (Upland, Calif.) turned away six of seven shots and registered a steal.
Senior center Nathan Jones (Villa Park, Calif.) scored two of Chapman's first three goals for a 3-0 margin in the first period. Ruggiero cracked the scoring column for the Lyons with 3:47 remaining in the opening quarter to make it 3-1. The Panthers tallied the final five goals of the period, capped by a marker from Lyon, to give them an 8-1 advantage.
The teams traded goals to open the second quarter with sophomore attacker Matthew Cormican (San Francisco, Calif.) finding the back of the net for Chapman and Kosiba scoring for Wheaton to make it 9-2 with 6:34 showing on the second quarter clock.
The Panthers started to put the match away with nine unanswered goals over an 8:15 span with Fisher scoring twice. Chapman owned an 18-2 cushion, before Guess scored for the Lyons to cut the difference to 18-3 with 4:51 to play in the quarter.
Chapman tallied the final nine markers to set the final at 27-3. Fisher netted the final goal with 2:44 left in the game.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Friday, October 3 when it plays California Lutheran University in the Gary Troyer Invitational hosted by Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. At 5:45 p.m. ET, while the Panthers play No. 8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at Brown.
