Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team was defeated by No. 8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 17-3, this morning in the Bruno Invite hosted by Brown University at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons fall to 0-5 on the season, while the Engineers, who are ranked in the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III national poll, improve to 4-5.
MIT owned a healthy 48-20 shot advantage over Wheaton.
Sophomores Spyros Rapsomanikis (Kerkyra, Greece), Jack Ruggiero (Hamden, Conn.) and Michael Ruemelin (Chicago, Ill.) all notched a goal for the Lyons. Rapsomanikis added four drawn exclusions and a steal, while Ruemelin also recorded a drawn exclusion. First year goalie Nic Boyer (Toledo, Ohio) stopped 11 shots and came up with a pair of steals.
Senior center Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) and first year utility player David Ranaudo (Miami Lakes, Fla.) each netted three goals to lead the Engineers, while first year attacker Nick Soule (San Diego, Calif.) scored twice to go with three steals and a trio of assists. Sophomore attacker Avi Narula (Atlanta, Ga.) potted two goals to go with a pair of assists and senior center David Keller (Long Beach, Calif.) scored twice in addition to coming up with a pair of thefts. Sophomore goalie Joshua Woren (Aurora, Colo.) turned away seven of 10 shots and sophomore netminder Armaan Gill (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped the only shot he faced for MIT.
The Engineers scored all nine markers in the opening quarter, including two apiece from Ivatorov and Narula.
Wheaton tallied two of the first three goals of the second quarter, including scores from Rapsomanikis and Ruggiero, to make it 10-2 with 2:03 to play in the first half. Each team scored three times in the period, including Ruemelin with the Lyons' third marker and Ranaudo with a power play goal to finish the second quarter and give MIT a 12-3 margin.
The Engineers scored all three goals of the third quarter and the final two markers in the fourth quarter, including the final goal from Keller with 4:50 left, to close out the scoring.
Wheaton returns to action when they take on Chapman University at 5:00 p.m., while MIT plays No. 7 Johns Hopkins at 3:45 p.m.
