Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. –- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team was defeated by Salem University, 20-10, late this afternoon in the Navy Open hosted by United States Naval Academy at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
The Lyons fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 6-5.
Wheaton sophomore utility player Spyros Rapsomanikis (Kerkyra, Greece), sophomore two-meter defender Josh Vander Wagen (Brookfield, Ill.) and first year attackers Bray Turner (Forney Texas) and Charles Jacoby (Reading, Pa.) each netted two goals apiece for Wheaton. Rapsomanikis also added four assists, five steals and seven drawn exclusions, while Vander Wagen had a pair of steals. Junior utility player Connor Tompkins (Oakley, Calif.) dished out three assists in addition to a steal and a drawn exclusion. First year goalie Nic Boyer (Toledo, Ohio) made 15 saves for the Lyons.
Gage Buttice (Longwood, Fla.) and Timothy Fischer (Chicago, Ill.) each netted five goals to pace Salem, while Nicholas Duncan (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net four times.
The Tigers scored five of the six goals in the opening quarter. Buttice opened the game's scoring with a marker just 48 seconds into the contest, before Rapsomanikis matched him with a score just 10 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1. Salem ripped off four straight goals, including a goal from Fischer with just 38.2 seconds left in the period to give the Tigers a four-goal margin.
Connor McAlister (Denton, Texas) and Vander Wagen traded goals to open the second quarter to set the count at 6-2 in favor of Salem with 6:53 showing in the period. The Tigers closed out the quarter with four unanswered goals to take a 10-2 advantage into the intermission.
Fischer tallied the first goal of the third quarter, before the Lyons erupted for five straight goals, including a pair from Jacoby, to cut the deficit to 11-7 with 2:53 to play in the quarter. Duncan and Kelvin Ceasar (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago) each scored before the end of the quarter to get a pair of scores back for Salem and give the Tigers a 13-7 lead heading into the final quarter of action. Sophomore two-meter defender Jack Ruggiero (Hamden, Conn.) scored the first marker of the period to pull Wheaton within 13-8, but Salem scored the next five goals, including two apiece for Duncan and Buthie, to give it comfortable breathing room with an 18-8 advantage with 2:58 left in the contest. Turner and Fischer each traded a pair of goals for both sides in the final minutes to set the final at 20-10.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they take on Connecticut College at Navy's Scott Natatorium at 8:00 a.m., while Salem plays Navy at Lejeune Hall at the same time.
