Copp Leads Men's Track & Field at Regis Spring Classic

WESTON, Mass. – Junior Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) recorded the fourth-best mark in school history in both the discus throw and the shot put to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team to a seventh-place team finish today at the Regis Spring Classic at in Weston, Mass.

The Lyons tallied 28 points, while Plymouth State University racked up 139 points to win the team crown.

Copp finished fourth in the discus throw with a heave of 37.93 meters, while also placing seventh in the shot put with a mark of 12.50 meters. Wheaton sophomore Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) registered a distance of 39.04 meters for the fourth-best mark in school annals in the hammer throw to give him a fourth-place showing. He also finished 18th in the discus with a throw of 30.12 meters. First year Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) finished 14th with a personal-record toss of 29.97 meters in the hammer throw. 

Sophomore Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) finished second in the pole vault for the Lyons with a personal-record mark of 2.90 meters and was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.56. He set a personal-best in the event's preliminaries with a clip of 16.84.

First year Travis C. James (Hamden, Conn.) finished fourth in the 100 meters for Wheaton, while senior Ryan Ventura (South Easton, Mass.) just missed a spot in the finals with a time of 11.61 to finish ninth in the prelims. 

Ventura and James joined junior GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) to combine on a time of 44.87 to place fourth in the 4X100-meter relay for the Lyons. Mualis was also ninth in the 200 meters with a personal-record mark of 23.23, while Ventura was 11th with a time of 23.28. 

Wheaton first year Dan McIntyre (Keene, N.H.) led the team's distance runners with a personal-record time of 4:24.52 to finish fifth in the 1500 meters, while classmate Nathan Pires (Yarmouth, Maine) also established a personal-record with a mark of 4:27.97 to place eighth. Junior Parker Fullem (Wantage, N.J.) finished 15th in the event with a time of 4:45.83.

Giatrakos led the Lyons' 400-meter contingent, placing seventh in the race with a personal-record mark of 52.85. Junior Nathan Plympton (East Greenwich, R.I.) was ninth in the race at 53.86 and senior Will Singer (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed 10th with a time of 54.02.

First year Finn Morris (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) led Wheaton in the 5000 meters, clocking in at 17:47.21 to finish 12th in the race.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they compete in the Emory Dooley Elite Meet hosted by Emory College in Atlanta, Ga. at 10:00 a.m.
