SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – First year Scott Sloan (Barrington, R.I.) became the first javelin thrower in school history to win the gold medal, while setting a new conference, school and facility record in the event this afternoon at the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Mount Holyoke College at MHC Track & Turf in South Hadley, Mass.
The Lyons are currently in sixth place with 22 points, sitting behind fifth-place Springfield College (24) and fourth-place United States Coast Guard Academy (27). Worcester Polytechnic Institute leads after day one of the meet with 52 points.
Sloan's toss of 66.53 meters breaks his own school record, set last week, by more than four meters. His distance erased the former conference mark of 63.41 meters set by Whit DeVaux of Springfield College in 2018 and nips the MHC Track & Turf record of 66.41 meters established by Liam Bourassa of Fitchburg State University in 2024. His throw also currently puts him fourth in NCAA Division III. Wheaton sophomore Cam Cross-Chinn (Newport, R.I.) added to the Lyons' point haul in the event with a fifth-place effort on a personal-best throw of 53.80 meters, which ranks 86th in NCAA Division III.
Senior Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) also medaled for Wheaton with a second-place finish in the long jump after a leap of 10.70 meters, which ranks him 48th in NCAA Division III. In addition, Peterson finished second in the 100-meter preliminaries with a time of 10.70 for the second-fastest mark in school annals and the 48th-best clip in NCAA Division III. First year Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) also qualified for tomorrow's final in the race with a personal-record time of 10.78 to finish sixth, while also putting him seventh all-time at Wheaton and 78th currently in NCAA Division III.
Wheaton senior Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles after shattering his personal-record time and breaking the school record with a clip of 14.51 to finish fourth in the event. He tops the former school standard of 14.56, set by Howard Powell '10 on May 9, 2009 at the All New England Championship. First year Gavin Landry (Westbrook, Maine) was ninth in the race with a time of 15.44.
Sophomore Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) currently sits in third place with 2935 points through five events of the decathlon for the Lyons. He finished first in the 100 meters with a mark of 11.58, second in the 400 meters at 52.16, third in both the long jump (5.92 meters) and high jump (1.60 meters) and fourth in the shot put with a heave of 9.38 meters.
Sophomore Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) recorded a toss of 39.48 meters to finish 13th in the hammer throw and first year Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) finished 16th with a personal-record mark of 32.41 meters for the Lyons.
A pair of first years led Wheaton in the 10,000 meters. Finn Morris (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) crossed the line at 37:20.67 to place 14th, while first year Nathan Pires (Yarmouth, Maine) was right behind him at 37:25.63 to finish 15th.
The Lyons return to South Hadley tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to compete in the final day of the NEWMAC Championship at Mount Holyoke.
