CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First year Scott Sloan (Barrington, R.I.) placed first and shattered the school record in the javelin throw and senior Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) broke the program record with a first-place effort in the 200 meters to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team at the Sean Collier Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Morrison Track at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.
Sloan obliterated the former Wheaton mark of 55.85 meters set by Sam Fear '13 on March 23, 2013 at the Bridgewater State Invitational with a throw of 62.49 meters, which is good for the 10th-best mark in NCAA Division III. Peterson clocked in at 21.38 to supplant the former mark of 21.54, jointly set by both Merzudin Ibric '10 and Cailean Robinson '12 at the MIT Last Chance Qualifier on May 21, 2010. Peterson's time currently places him 18th in NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Cam Cross-Chinn (Newport, R.I.) placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 51.04 meters for the Lyons.
First year Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) finished ninth in the 200 meters with a personal-record time of 22.05. Senior John Dowgiert (Methuen, Mass.) finished 11th in the race with a clip of 22.32, while first year Aidan Greenleaf (Topsham, Mass.) placed 15th with a mark of 22.61. In addition, Peterson finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 10.61 to rank as the second-fastest time in program history, while ranking 47th in NCAA III. Vera registered a time of 10.85 for a ninth-place finish for Wheaton and the ninth-fastest time in school history. First year Travis C. James (Hamden, Conn.) placed 15th in the race with a personal-record mark of 11.02.
Senior Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.75 for the second-fastest time in school annals and the 36th-fastest in NCAA Division III. First year Gavin Landry (Westbrook, Maine) finished seventh with the ninth-fastest mark in school history at 15.43. Sophomore Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) turned in a personal-best mark of 16.27 to finish 13th in the race for the Lyons.
Junior Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) improved on his own school record in the mile with a time of 4:16.53 to finish 18th in the event. First year Nathan Pires (Yarmouth, Maine) placed eighth in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:17.41 to lead Wheaton. First year Finn Morris (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finished ninth with a time of 17:17.75. Junior Nick Lacroix (Bedford, N.H.) crossed the finish at 10:01.62 to place 10th in the 3000 meters.
Sophomore Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) led the Lyons' throwers with a toss of 40.78 meters to finish eighth in the hammer throw with a distance that ranks as the fourth-best in program history, while first year Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) was 18th in the event with a mark of 30.76 meters. Junior Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) led Wheaton in both the discus throw and the shot put with 14th-place showings in both. Copp recorded a throw of 34.90 in the discus and a heave of 11.83 in the shot put.
Junior Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) finished 15th with a personal-record time of 52.60 in the 400 meters, while senior Zac Elmasri (Groton, Mass.) was 16th at 53.01. First year Dan McIntyre (Keene, N.H.) placed 21st to lead Wheaton with a personal-record time of 4:22.46.
The Lyons return to the track on Friday, April 25 when they travel to South Hadley, Mass. to compete in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship, hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
