FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Sophomore starting pitcher Aiden Cardoza (Dartmouth, Mass.) allowed just two runs over six innings work and the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team broke the game open with five runs in the fifth in a 6-2 win over Framingham State University this afternoon at Durfee High School in Fall River, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Rams drop to 1-1.
Cardoza (1-0) scattered seven hits and struck out seven against just one walk to get his first win of the season, before juniors Jack Feltovic (Hadley, Mass) and Evan Mello (New Bedford, Mass) and senior Liam Goldthwaite (Braintree, Mass.) each threw a scoreless inning out of the Lyons' bullpen.
Sophomore catcher Tyler Bellan (Franklin, Mass) was 3-4, while sophomore center fielder Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.) had two hits, including a double, and the Lyons finished with 10 hits. Senior first baseman Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Senior third baseman Dean Frellick's (Fairview, N.C.) RBI single in the top of the first gave the Rams a 1-0 lead before the Lyons drew even in the third on an run-scoring double by Lamond.
Framingham State took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by first year second baseman Rosco Palmer (Shelburne Falls, Mass.).
The Lyons scored five times in the fifth on four hits. Wagner's two-run single gave Wheaton the lead 3-2.
First year shortstop Brandon Westerfield (Wakefield, R.I.) and Bellan added RBI singles pushing the lead to 5-2 before senior second baseman Tommy Beauregard (Salem. Mass) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to close the scoring giving Wheaton a 6-2 lead.
Josh Sunderland (Mansfield, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams, as he went 4 1/3 innings allowing six runs, five earned while allowing eight hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Senior left fielder Steven Burbank (Canton, Mass.) and Frellick each had two hits in the loss for Framingham State.
The Lyons are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Medford, Mass. to play Tufts University at 1:00 p.m. Framingham State will head to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
